The Google Lab, known for working on atypical projects, announced Thursday it was developing contact lenses that can help people with diabetes to manage their sugar levels.

“We are testing smart lenses made to measure glucose levels in tears,” said the two people behind the project, Brian Otis and Babak Parviz, in a blog post.

These lenses work by “using a small, connected chip and a miniaturized glucose sensor, which are enclosed between two layers of materials that make contact lenses,” they added.

According to them, clinical trials have already been done on this project which is still in its infancy, and discussions are ongoing with the FDA, the US Drug Agency.

The prototypes of these lenses can determine the amount of glucose in the tears every second.

Researchers are studying the possibility of incorporating light signals that would warn users when certain glucose thresholds are exceeded.

“We have always said that we are looking to work on projects that may seem strange,” noted Brian Otis and Babak Parviz. “But while the International Diabetes Federation said the world was” losing the battle for diabetes, “we thought this project was worth developing,” they concluded.
